Una piel hidrofugada es una piel que recibió un tratamiento especial que ofrece las siguientes características:
- Repelente al agua. Un cuero hidrofugado no permite que su superficie se moje. Se observa en su superficie un efecto de gotas.
- Resistencia al agua. Una piel hidrofugada debe resistir la absorción y transmisión del agua.
Muchas veces, para relizar una piel hidrofugada se ocupa un acabado especial a base de PU (poliuretano). El PU sella todos los poros de la piel hidrofugada. Es fácil diferenciar si una piel es hidrofugada por el brillo característico del poliuretano.
