A new TV, shirt or pair of shoes? Whatever it may be, it is human nature to bargain-hunt. But what is the real cost of bargain shopping? Its time for a fashion revolution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ozapato.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/VendingMachine1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"492\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Berlin, Germany, the leaders of the NGO<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fashion Revolution<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conducted an experiment earlier this year, selling t-shirts for only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u20ac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 in a public square.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ozapato.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fashion3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before purchasing the product, customers are shown a video that portrays the working conditions of a &#8220;sweatshop&#8221; in Asia, in which employees earn just $ 0.13 USD per hour:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ozapato.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/CheapClothing1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many are working up to 16 hours per day without being able to earn enough money to make a decent living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ozapato.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/VendingMachine6.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many responsible consumers decided to make a donation instead of purchasing a shirt at this price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ozapato.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fashion4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This video was published on April 24, 2015 &#8211; Fashion Revolution Day. This day commemorates the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fall of Rana Square<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Bangladesh in 2013, killing more than 1,000 workers in a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sweatshop<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that produces for stores such as JC Penney, Benetton, Wal-Mart, Zara, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container responsive-embed widescreen\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KfANs2y_frk?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/ozapato.com\/zm\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sweatshop<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> workers are often minors, grossly underpaid working 16 hours a day. The NGO wants to encourage people to start asking questions about their clothes, to know where products come from and under what conditions they were developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We&#8217;re not asking people to boycott their favorite stores, we have to change the fashion industry from the inside. People should start asking: \u2018Who made \u200b\u200bmy clothes and how were they produced?\u2019\u201d said the founder of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fashionrevolution.org\/&amp;usg=ALkJrhgYY_yDj82Ytz64PDHB_gxSagM9PQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fashion Revolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most recently on December 2nd, Fashion Revolution launched its first white paper, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s Time for a Fashion Revolution<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/eyd2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">European Year for Development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The paper sets out the need for more transparency across the fashion industry, from seed to waste and contextualises Fashion Revolution\u2019s efforts, the organisation\u2019s philosophy and how the public, the industry, policymakers and others around the world can work towards a safer, cleaner, more fair and beautiful future for fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The paper was launched at a joint event with the Fair Trade Advocacy Office in Brussels and hosted by Arne Leitz, Member of the European Parliament to mark the European Year for Development.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhether you are someone who buys and wears fashion (that\u2019s pretty much everyone) or you work in the industry along the supply chain somewhere or if you\u2019re a policymaker who can have an impact on legal requirements, you are accountable for the impact fashion has on people\u2019s lives.
